who am i?
In my artistic practice, I'm a creator, performer, and Mundane Afrofuturist who focuses on developing new work that celebrates the dreams of historically misrepresented communities. What's a Mundane Afrofuturist? Read Martine Syms' manifesto here!
My favorite artistic spaces are community-conscious and community-driven because they are opportunities to explore ideas of identity and belonging.
As a writer, I am a member of the 2019-21 Soho Rep Writer/ Director Lab and have worked at Ars Nova (ANT Fest 2019; Dreams in Black Major). As a director, I've worked at Second Stage Theater (Playwright’s Assistant; Straight White Men), The Public Mobile Unit (Assistant Director; Sweat), and Williamstown Theatre Festival (Apprentice Program).
Haruna Lee, playwright and icon, says, “Nia repurposes traditional modalities of theater and shape-shifts resources towards her own queer POC storytelling and community-building; her work is not daunted by 'the system', which is another way of saying she is always searching for the heart in any scenario." (Thank you Haruna!)
When I'm not dreaming and scheming, I am the Development Apprentice for Nine Muses Entertainment founded by Bryce Dallas Howard and the Interactive Social Media Manager at National Black Theatre. I received my BFA in Drama from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts (proud Experimental Theatre Wing baby).
